Great golfing in unique places … plus a discount

Now so far on our page, we have pointed out some of the most famous courses around the nation. These are the shining stars in both the rough… and on the greens. And though there is a special place in my heart for these exclusive courses, it has been brought to my attention that maybe we should point out some lesser known courses that we also find fabulous. And with this, I shall point your attention to a little golf haven known as Salt Lake.

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of the great greens in Utah, really not many people have and that what makes it so great. You are not fighting to get a great tee time but you will have some amazing golf. And just to sweetening the pot a little, we have found a golf package that almost makes the trip worthwhile from anywhere in the country that you are flying. CityDeals really has come through for us. We just used this package on a week long vacation and had so much money left over that we could enjoy ourselves more then usual. So trust me, if you want a nice break from the norm… look towards Utah

Olympic Club, San Francisco

Olympic Club. The Olympic Club is a private golf and athletics club in San Francisco that features three challenging 18-hole PGA courses – the Cliffs Course, Lakes Course and the Ocean Course.  It is located at the border of the city where San Francisco meets Daly City, California. The Olympic Club has been the site of some of the most dramatic final-round comebacks in U.S. Open history. In 1955, unheralded Jack Fleck rallied to beat Ben Hogan in a playoff, thus denying him a record fifth Open title. Eleven years later, Arnold Palmer blew a seven-stroke lead over the last nine holes to Billy Casper, and lost in an 18-hole playoff. The Olympic Club is proud to be known as the oldest athletic club in America.

The Olympic Club in San Francisco has hosted the U.S. Open in 1955, 1966, 1987, and 1998. The course is also the site of the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship and the 2012 U.S. Open. The course is hilly, with a heavy curtain of cypress and pine trees lining most holes.  They have some of the longest and most difficult par fours imaginable. The greens are fast and true.

Another awesome feature of the Olympic Club is the “Burger Dog” at the turn.  It’s a little snack shop that serves these delicious burgers shaped to fit in a hot dog bun.  They are scrumptious!

Cyprus Point Golf Club – Monterey, Ca.

The 18-hole “Cypress Point” course at the Cypress Point Club facility in Pebble Beach, California features 6,536 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Cypress Point Golf Course was created by the well renown designer Alister Mackenzie and opened in 1928. Consistently rated as one of the top 3 golf courses ever created by all major publications, Cypress Point offers natural beauty that is unmatched anywhere. The key to Mackenzie’s masterpiece is that he did not over power the natural terrain, he allowed the course to take shape organically. This course is best known work of Alister Mackenzie (1931). The course is flanked by sand and sea with fast greens and an undulating terrain on the Monterey Peninsula. Steep crevasses, doglegs and the wind is nearly always a factor.

Meandering through the coastal dunes, this immaculate course journeys into the Del Monte forest during the front nine and reemerges to the rocky coastline for the best set of finishing holes of all time. The signature hole is #16, which requires a 231-yard tee shot over the Pacific to a mid-sized green guarded by strategically placed bunkers, offers all the dynamics you could imagine on a majestic oceanfront par three. With the famous back-to-back par three’s, #15 and #16, not to mention the spectacular par four 17th, set in the most exquisite natural location ever imagined for a course, the back-nine is truly the Holy Grail of golf.

The Royal County Downs Golf Club – Ireland

The Royal County Downs Golf Club was founded in 1889. It is one of oldest golf courses in Ireland. It has two eighteen hole links courses, the Championship Course and the Annesley Links. The Championship course measures over 7,200 yards from the back tees and the fourth and ninth holes are featured in the book The 500 World’s Greatest Golf Holes. Golf Digest ranks this course #1 in the world outside of the United States.

Royal County Down is situated to the north of the coastal resort of Newcastle, in the foothills of the Mountains of Mourne. The words and music ‘Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea’ written by Percy French in 1896 have made the Mournes the best known mountains in Ireland. An area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Mourne Mountains are the most picturesque in Ireland and were the inspiration for C S Lewis’s  Chronicles of Narnia. In this compact range, 15 miles long and 8 miles wide, only a dozen of the sixty summits rise above 2,000ft., Slieve Donard, at 2,796 feet, being the highest peak in Ulster.

The Royal County Down course is set amid the Dundrum complex, one of the largest dune areas in Europe, which includes the beaches and dunes at Ballykinler and Murlough, Inner Dundrum Bay and Newcastle beach. The ‘modern’ sand dune deposits, which form the terrain of the golf course, date back almost 5,000 years to the early Bronze Age. The sand deposits sit atop much older gravel and clay layers and the whole sequence has been used to date changes in sea levels along the north east coast of Ireland since the last Ice Age.
